The ARP 2600: A Short Overview Part One

Back

Here is a demonstration of the sound and functionality of the ARP 2600 analog synthesizer.
Something about the source material (despite having been recorded in the same fashion as all of my videos) has resulted in the YouTube compression generating a lot of audio artifacts. No attempt I've made has resulted in a removal of this effect. Hopefully, you can listen past the effect of YouTubes compression to hear the sound of this synthesizer in these two videos! Hopefully, this problem won't exist in subsequent examples.

keep it up!

This really highlights all the things I hate about modern synths, it's the fact that about everything you do turns into a little happy waspy noise. I detest filters and love a good amount of distortion and the beautiful angry sounds you can make with the ARP really please me.

I used to own a ARP OMNI 2, but now it makes no sound, :( it was stored wrongly,-in a basement -leaning against a wall. :( -can it ever work again? or is it hopeless?
AutomaticGainsay (February 28, 2008 at 8:25 am)
Omnis tend to fail, unfortunately! It can work again... it's just a matter of how much you want to pay to get it there! There are better synths with the Omni's functionality that you can likely buy for less than the repair may cost!

That's what I thought. It was mostly a sentimental thing, it was my first keyboard My dad got for me when I was a kid in 1978. But it did make sounds like the ARP 2600, mostly it had the strings sounds. Thanks for the advice! Your very kind!

dude you are soo lucky are all of these synths yours?! Oh and I can tell rabid mongoose that it was a lowery home organ set on a setting called Marimba repeat on baba o riley. The ARP was only used slightly as a filter. Although on won't get fooled again an EMSVCS3 was used, set on sample and hold. The output of the lowery was fed through this giving the organ that choppy filter sound.

Ive watched a bunch of your Arp 2600 videos. My question is how do you get the sound used in The Who's Baba O'riley? Some people claim they used a Lowrey organ, others say it was an Arp 2600
AutomaticGainsay (February 14, 2008 at 9:06 pm)
I think I saw a demonstration once of how it was done on the Lowrey! Or, at least, heard from a trustworthy resource that that's how it was done..
I'm not sure how it would be done with a 2600, I would have to listen to it again..
